Maybe also see Qemu which has the free-to-use Qemu Accelerator module
(http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/qemu-accel.html). Qemu "runs most
of the target application code directly on the host processor to achieve
near native performance".

Only on Linux, though.
