I would first try Mepis (mepis.org), and if everything is detected fine,
that's it.
Second choice I would do is (K)Ubuntu. Current version detected and
correctly configured my internal atheros a/g/b correctly. (In which
unfortunately Mepis fails...)
Both are available as live CD....
With laptop, I would pay special attention to be portable, therefore
wireless stuff should work well. Mine is currently working very well
with wpa authentication etc.... I do not remember which gui network
manager these days integrates with wpa_supplicant as I'm writing this
mail from the winblows side.... soon to be gonerrrr.....
