With all the arab estereotyping and demonizing, it is easy to forget the big
contributions of Islam to the development of Western Civilization. The
Islamic civilization reached its peak around 800 to 900 AD. At its peak,
the Islamic Civilization covered all of Spain, North Africa, the Middle
East, all the way to India, a time when all of Europe was sunked deep in the
Dark Ages. Islamic cities such as Cordova (Spain), Alexandria (Egipt),
Damascus (Siria), and Bagdad (Irak) boasted such modern amenities as running
water, paved streets, and sewage systems, the likes of which were not seen
in Europe until the XIX century. People enjoyed public baths for washing
while people in Europe seldom took a bath (if ever) in their life time (just
remember, Henry VIII used to take a bath every year). Islamic universities
and centers of learning were famous and boasted such learned men as
Maimonides (a great matematician, inventor of the concept of zero),
Averrodes (a great doctor and pharmacist), and others. Islamic arquitecture
was also flourishing producing marvelous buildings such as the Great Mosque
in Cordova, and the beatiful palace of La Alhambra, in Granada (Spain).
Chiefly among Muslim contributions to the development of Western
Civilization were:

Discovery of the basic laws for navigation using the movement of the stars
and the sun, and invention of such instruments as the astrolabe and the
sextant. These discoveries use to navigate in the desert, made possible long
sea trips and were basic for the later discovery and conquest of the
Americas, Australia, etc.

Astronomic discoveries and cataloguing. Astronomic arab words such as
azimuth, nadir, Aldebaran, etc. are still in use today.

Invention of the concept of zero (an invention shared with the Mayans in
Central America), and the basic, "arabic", numbers used today
(0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9), as well as Algebra, and contributions to the
development of finite mathematics that were later used by Newton and
Leibnitz for the development of Calculus.

Invention of the first catalog of plants by pharmaceutical uses and
properties which is still being used.

Preservation and propagation of the writings and ideas of greek and roman
philosophers and writers, which were it not for the Arabs, would have
disapeared forever.

Development of irrigation systems for agricultural use later on copied
throughout Europe, and the rest of the world.

At its peak, Islam also provided shelter and a very tolerant environment for
jews that were persecuted throughout christian Europe. Jewish neighborhoods
flourished in most Islamic cities such as Cordova, Sevilla (Spain), Cairo,
and Damascus. Jewish sages such as Maimonides were famous and respected.
The recent conflict between Jews and Muslims is modern, and dates back to
the creation of Israel in 1947, and to the displacement of the palestinians.
There were also christian quarters in most Islamic cities.

All this knowledge was later on trasferred to the rest of Europe, by either
conquest of muslim cities (such as the conquest of Toledo (Spain) ), or by
the arribal of European students to Muslim universities such as the one in
Cordova.

Of course, all civilizations decline (as will probably be ours). Its is
perhaps part of a cycle of renewal as new fresh people with new customs, and
new ideas that build upon the old. Remember, everything is always in
change. Things that do not change, die.

Israel is *not* occupying Palestinian land. It is occupying land
that it captured from Egypt (the Gaza strip), Jordan (the West
Bank) and Syria (the Golan Heights) that it captured during the
Arab/Egyptians' last attempt to exterminate the Jews (1973 war).

Israel also captured the Sinai peninsula from Egypt, and gave it
back as part of the '79 peace treaty.

The whole region was created out of whole cloth (and "managed" by
the Brits) after WW1 and the defeat of the Ottoman *Empire*,
and then they gave it up after WW2.

Then explain that to the thousands of Palestinians who have been displaced due
to the creation of the state of Israel. The whole mess started with the
creation of a Jewish state. Leaving it as a unified state would have been fine,

It looks like we went from having a Jewish problem to having a Palestinian
problem. Now, the jews do not want palestinian inside Israel as it would
lose its jewish character (there are more than 5 million palestinian to 3
million jews), and the palestinians do not want the jews as the jews
possesing more education will undoubtedly dominate. There we have a problem
that will last ages. Lets get back to Linux!!

Just a reminder here. Israel existed a long time before this,in case you

If you knew, or cared enough about yourself to know, the bible well you
would realize that our civilization will not decline as the 4 great kingdoms
of the world that were predicted by King Nebuchadnezzar's dream of the
statue have come and gone. The next newest and greatest idea will be the
mandating of religious observance by law. And that will signify that the
end is "even at the door".

The Lord changes not. And as far I can see, he is still alive and well,
waiting to return.
