The technology chief admitted that the reason that the virus succeeded
was that the people in charge of the server were lax in their virus
prevention. They are trying to do it right, now. They have locked out all
requests from the schools to the main server, which has been cleaned and
reloaded. Then somebody from the technology department is supposed to go to
each school Tuesday, clean and reload each local server and shut it down
immediately. Wednesday is when we do our thing of rebooting the local server
then bringing up every machine in the school one at a time as we check it.
>From then on, there is supposed to be a daily update of panda and an
automatic push of any updates to all online machines throughout the
district.
Sure would be nice if they'd migrate to Apache. And no, they're not
giving us a dime. Anybody that does this will only be for the sake of the
students.

Joey,
Guess you're still online. I was talking to Matt about somebody
approaching the school board with a proposal for migrating and maintaining
their web site. He told me about the website you set up for him,
www.patientcarerx.com, so I went to check it out. I keep getting the message
that the site cannot be found. It doesn't respond to a ping either.
I'm going through UNO's DNS, which is normally pretty reliable. You
might want to check why the site isn't in the DNS.

I am getting a problem though, when I follow some of the links which point

That is from the HOME link on the "navigation bar."
When I put in .php it works though.
Might want to check those links out.

To all who volunteered to help at my school tomorrow,
A funny thing happened today. At the OPSB technology meeting yesterday,
they told us that we would have to do all the stuff I wrote about last
night. This morning while I was setting up some new computers (nothing to do
with the virus stuff), 5 guys walked in the door to do what I had been told
I was supposed to do Wednesday. Naturally, I was glad to see them. I asked
just what my responsibility would be since they were doing what I thought I
would need to. None of them had a clue. I called the technology department
and was told that they were sent to my school because the state
superintendent of education is going to visit us Thursday. Aha! We would
never want the bigwigs to know that conditions are anything less than
perfect. (The poor slobs at the schools he isn't going to visit don't get
any help.)
Since most of my work was done for me -- Hallelujah!! -- thanks to all
who offered to help, but it won't be needed after all.
Thanks,

Guys,
Many of you have heard of the Nimda worm/virus. Well, the Orleans Parish
School Board web server caught it last week, and there are fears that it
spread throughout the schools. (My Linux network, which the school system's
tech people don't understand, is probably the most bullet-proof part of the
whole system -- being behind a firewall -- and is unaffected.)
The system's MS servers have been reloaded and cleaned with the "panda"
anti-virus program. Each school's local server is also being reloaded and
cleaned. Now, here's the part I am hoping for help with. Guess who has to
check each and every Windows PC in their school for the virus? Not somebody
from the central office, but the school's designated technology coordinator.
That means that starting Wed. morning I will be pulled out of my classroom
(as will at least one teacher in every other public school in the parish)
for as long as it takes to check all of the machines in the building. Sounds
like fun, except that my kids are woefully unprepared for the LEAP and Iowa
math tests which are coming up in 6 months. I absolutely hate losing class
time, because a substitute is not going to do the same job teaching them
that I would.
Does anybody have any time you could spare Wednesday to help inventory
and check computers? The checking part mainly involves seeing if they have a
networking dialog box that includes the domain (a la NT). Every one that
does needs to be logged on and have the new panda program run. Those that
don't have the proper login dialog (and most won't) need to be tagged and
inventoried so the technology department can come load a patch to require a
logon ID and password. The latter category should be quick; it's just the
fact of having to turn on and watch dozens of computers boot up that bugs
me.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Dave Prentice
prentice@instruction.com
p.s. I tried to talk the new Orleans networking chief into migrating to
Apache/Linux. He says he's no fan of MS, but there's no way he could
persuade the system to change.

I cleaned up PAC building at UNO, remotely from home. (those machines that

There are standalone tools to remove nimda. These tools can be used
remotely.
This, however does not protect or fix them against other viruses that UNO
campus was/is infested with.
Also, it will come back as long as there are no AV programs on the
workstations and there is infected machines present. :o( Therefore manual
machine to machine labor is still needed in some cases. (obviously)
As it seems to be in very many cases and areas over here, that prevention is
ignored efficiently and only when "shit is in the pants already" people wake
up and start crying for their misery.
