Thanks. I didn't know there was a separate, numeric network ID (and I don't think my friend did either). Finally this all makes sense! I knew there had to be something different between AT&T and BellSouth, and you're the first one with a clue in that direction.

The only other thing I can think of is to make sure your friend gave you his network user ID
& password and not his email user ID & password. WorldNet uses one (usually numeric)
user ID and password (usually a random string of 12+ upper & lower case letters, numbers &
symbols - not changeable by the user) to make the connection and another user ID (the
part preceding the @att.net) & password to access email, user setup, etc.

Take a look at the example account.txt file at http://www.wurd.com/eng/help/template.txt
. To connect, you want to use the LoginName and Password parameters.

Thus the "Network id is a non-digit or no @ sign" error message (?).

Thanks, I already tried that and it didn't help. I was already able to dial BellSouth, and this
didn't make any difference at all. It IS an authorization problem, but other than telling how to
set up /etc/ppp/chap-secrets, which I have already done, it doesn't go any further. The
last error message I got said (Network id is a non-digit or no @ sign), and I have no idea
what to do about this.

You may find some help at the WorldNet User's Reference Desk, specifically at
http://www.wurd.com/eng/setup/dialers/linux.html .
