You may find some help at the WorldNet User's Reference Desk, specifically at

Am trying to get the computer of my friend from Pass Christian, MS to connect to his
AT&T account. I have it here in NO and am using 324-1310 to dial in. He just had to have
a new hard disc and was using only WordPad as software, so what an opporunity to
migrate!
I installed RH 7.2 and had no trouble connecting with my BellSouth account. But AT&T
keeps giving me the same message: "login failed, reason =(-190,
diltx45ev,1022xxxxxx-000," etc. and "Connection closed by foreign host."
AT&T's personnel over chathelp.att.net have ranged from apologetic to downright rude.
They referred me to a web page devoted to Linux connections, which didn't help. When I
logged in to chathelp again is when I got the rude person.
There must be some simple difference between AT&T and BellSouth setup. I was also
getting BellSouth but not AT&T on my Linux box (newly upgraded to 7.2), but it drops off to
at preset. I am writing on my HP notebook connected thru BellSouth's ADSL. Getting my
Linux box to connect here is my next project.
I'm supposed to go to Pass Christian on Friday and take my friend's computer back to
him. He's putting on a family reunion on 6/8-9 and needs his e-mail!
