Besides the excellent advice you can get from most of the folks on this
list, here is a well documented site that deals exactly with what you are

As for transfering files from your hosted site to your local machine, there
are a few things you could do. The most popular would be to use an FTP
program. You should have one on your linux box and/or you could just use
your web browser as an FTP -you will need to get the login ID and PASS from
the people who intially put the site up for you. Also, as I believe your
site is all made of static HTML pages, you could just copy your site page by
page through your web browser to your home computer.
