And then you compile+install all the GNU Software by hand, or
discover Nexenta Core and its GNU/Ubuntu+OpenSolaris-based goodness,
In either case, bliss and convenience is restored, after (maybe) a
little work, and you get some very interesting features available to
play with, depending on hardware... features like ZFS, SMF,
'self-healing', FM, fault management.

You don't need to tolerate 'unix hell' to use the Solaris base for some things.
It's definitely worth playing with.

Remember.... ad-hoc scripts like 'mysqld_safe'. But mysqld_safe
won't restart Apache or $random_other_program that crashes, or do
much at all to report the nature of the fault (whether the program
crashed, or hung) anyways.

SMF is useful. SysV Init is pretty dumb.

gzip and less are of course readily available.

It's not like Solaris is without bash, color ls, and your usual
amenities like VIM, and GNU flavor of Tar is also available just not
by default.
