"not by default" was my point. As Ron said, lots of company's don't allow
3rd party software. If it doesn't come directly from the OS/DB/middleware
vendor, then it's not permitted. One reason IBM ships a cd with GNU
utilities for AIX is so you can say "we got it from IBM".
Smart companies have IT managers that can make a policy to say "we trust
software from sunfreeware.com". But it's not a bad policy to not allow
software from jackassunixstuff.com or any other random site to be
installed on production servers.
If you're only accustomed to Linux/BSD and their niceties, and you have to
hop on a Solaris or AIX box without said niceties, you may be in for a
little shock.
