Does installing 3rd party software on Solaris void any Solaris
support/warranty? That may also
be an issue with installing extra software. You start getting a lot of
finger pointing and
IT managers like to avoid that issue.

It's good to stick with the defaults.
I know that SuSE likes to add several aliases to their default bash,
which is nice, until
you go use those commands on other flavors and nothing works.
