Yep. This is how my mom has been setup for 2+ years. She uses
StarOffice and Mozilla for 99% of what she wants to do.

If knoppix worked for you, do a knoppix install of debian. Very very
easy. Instructions are here:

The hardware autodetection in Knoppix is amazing. I've thrown it at
some weird hardware and it picks it up. At work I have a stack of
quad Xeon dell 6650's with PERC RAID controllers and copper GigE on
the motherboard. In other words very new stuff. Knoppix picks it all
up without any effort from me.

I am using Knoppix and partimage (http://www.partimage.org) to take
image snapshots of Win2k boxes. Boot into knoppix, mount a temporary
nfs share I've set up on a sun box that's attached to a big storage
array and make images with partimage. Very sweet. I inherited a junk
box to mess with and did a knoppix hd install as described above.
