Milter is a sendmail API that allows an external program, like MIMEDefang,
to manipulate various things throughout the SMTP transaction. MIMEDefang
is one of the most popular milters. The milter interface is written in
C, but most of the rest is written in perl. You can do such things as
rename attachments, strip attachments, replace attachments with a URL,
change/add/remove headers, add/change/remove receipients, log things to
mysql, or pretty much anything else you can think of. And external
programs, like Spamassassin and clamav, easily plug into MIMEDefang to
let you do the spam/virus scanning. The config is a perl script, so it
helps to know perl and those regular expressions. The author (David Skoll)
has a commercial product, Can-It Pro, that i think has a web interface so
you don't need to know all that perl.
