Yes, I think RFS would be the way to go. It's amazing how trying to do
a single thing, like set up IMAP properly for a medium sized
organization, can avalanche into a complete re-think of how things are
done. OK, I'll put that on a test server.
Interesting that you use exim. That's what I use also. But I haven't set
it up with virtual domains (as I have with qmail and sendmail), how much
of a pain is it to do?
