In addition to what Manuel and Andrew have said, ensure that these
modules are either loaded or compiled in:
  usb-storage
  scsi_mod
  sg
  sd_mod

Here's my entries in /etc/fstab :
/dev/sda1 /hot/usb/CF vfat rw,suid,dev,exec,noatime,noauto,user,async 0
2
/dev/sdb1 /hot/usb/SD vfat rw,suid,dev,exec,noatime,noauto,user,async 0
2

After you stick in the card, you'll have to run rescan-scsi-bus.sh
as root, to tell the SCSI sub-system about the card.

You'll also need the hot-plug packages installed.

After seeing all the viruses, trojan horses, worms and Reply
mails from stupidly-configured anti-virus software that's been
hurled upon the internet for the last 3 years, and the time/money
that is spent protecting against said viruses, trojan horses &
worms, I can only conclude that Microsoft is dangerous to the
internet and American commerce, and it's software should be
banned.
