There are high-speed CF cards now, and USB 2.0 readers.

With enough parallelism (i.e. people + card readers), and stuff like
automount daemons and scripts to mv the data as soon as the card
is mounted, it should be pretty quick.

If HDs are used, they can be slapped into racks full of empty
HD slots, so that no data xfer would be needed. Just mount them
and they're on-line.
