Hi Charles.

The totals shown for packet loss by that site are TOTALLY WORTHLESS. Take a
look at the individual numbers and you will see that they are including links
which are 100% down. Also, you will note a large number of 6% loss links, but
no 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 7%, 8%, 9%, 10% links. What are the odds? IMPOSSIBLE!

Enjoy,

John

The Internet on average has 4% packet loss so yes 1% is usually acceptable.
While it may not be acceptable to someone paying for a service it is a fact of

life in some cases. Depending on where you are going on the Internet it is
acceptable in general terms.

BTW, the average packet loss across North America this morning was 5% as
reported at: http://www.internettrafficreport.com/main.htm

John, an interesting take on this... Did I say it was the final word? No,
because there is no such thing as one site providing the total picture. I use
this site as I do many others as part of the whole picture for troubleshooting.

Is there data or concepts flawed? Perhaps, they have been tracking the data
longer than almost anyone else. Which by no means makes them the definitive
know-all and see-all for this type of data. Again, they are but one source.

One question. If a router (whether or not it is a main backbone router) is down
should it not be counted in the averaged statistics????

Sorry if I sound "huffed" I've been dealing with some challenging people all day
and am at the point where I am giving them very stern direct answers and
requests. Such is the life of dealing with vendors....

Cheers,
Charles
