Two things...
Edit your /etc/kernel-img.conf to look like this:
----- start kernel-img.conf -----
do_symlinks = no
relative_links = no
do_bootloader = no
do_bootfloppy = no
do_initrd = yes
link_in_boot = no
postinst_hook = /sbin/update-grub
postrm_hook = /sbin/update-grub
----- end kernel-img.conf -----
Then, as root, run:
# apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-1-686-smp
Make sure your /boot/grub/menu.lst contains the line "savedefault" and
at reboot, select the SMP kernel from the list.
That should be all you need to do.
