>From what you describe, your problem is internal, probably on the w2k system
itself. The 169.254.x.x address is the result of it running DHCP to get a
local address, but not finding a DHCP server, hence generating one itself from
the 169.254.x.x "self assigned" range. From what you describe the machine
should have a static address. Apparent it doesn't, hence the problem.

     I got both my desktop systems (Linux and w2k) working again by
recovering all the data I could that hadn't already been backed up and then
formatting the hard disks. But I can't get into the internet from either one
now, and doing it on the laptops is about to make me go blind.
     The Linux system (FC2) has the proper driver for the NIC installed as a
module (r8169) but, according to the Network Device Control, it's looking
for Gigabit Internet driver 1.1.2, which doesn't exist. It shows up in the
NDC as grayed out so I can't change it. I have had no luck finding out where
it gets that. The old disk, which would for a while still get the internet
but had other problems which made it impossible to do some things, showed
r8169. I have tried several installs and keep coming up with the same thing.
     My w2k system can sometimes see other computers (w95 and w98 laptops)
but won't connect to the internet, even though the router lights flash when
I try, which sounds like an authentication problem to me. What's puzzling,
though, is even when it will see another computer and even copy files from
it, it won't ping anything but itself (as 169.254.115.13, wherever that came
from) and sometimes the router as 192.168.254.254, which it's supposed to
be, and sometimes 192.168.254.255, whatever that is (the other computers are
supposed to be 192.168.254.1, 3 and 4). Does w2k need an authentication
script to get into Southern Star? If so, I need to find out what needs to be
in that file.
     The NICs are built into both m/bs, and are sometimes seen as RTL-8169
and sometimes as VIA Rhine II. he router is a Siemens 2614, and the ethernet
bridge is a Siemens Speedstream 5360 and they work fine with the laptops and
did with the Linux box until the corrupted disk got too bad.
