Hi Brett.
Sure, I'm biased - I'm the one trying to stay in business, the ISP business.
Consider: No business is going to open without power and phone. If they have
phone then odds are (based on my user base) 99% that I can supply ADSL to
them. So where is the "emergency" need?
Also, BellSouth themselves, not to mention other ISPs, already have wireless
setups which cover downtown and other areas. BellSouth set up theirs because
of the storm. Considering this, it sort of looks like the City is kicking
them, not the other way around. Oh, let's not forget the wireless data
services offered by the cell phone companies, too. And of course the Cox
Cable system.
What's the "emergency" need for 512K vs the legal 128K? 128K is all you need
to do email and credit card verifications.
Overall, I don't see it as a BIG threat. After all: No static IP, probably
no tech support (just my guess), no security (anyone can capture your data),
and no coverage in areas which I don't already cover.
I guess that I view this as a pothole in the Internet Highway. <g>

Doesn't that mean they are a competitor of yours as well? You are
looking at it from a different perspective, which I understand - but
here is how most look at it ....
- hurricane hits
- bell south tries to do a good thing (presumably innocent at first,
but..)
- NO opens wifi (which totally freaking rox0rz for 99.99% of those who
are affected by it)
- bell south cries foul, take ball home
New Orleans right now is in no place to be a fair, competitive market.
The area will require YEARS of gov't subsidies and special treatment to
get back on its feat. It is going to be a unfair market place for years
to come, but at the end of the day this will be good. It goes way
beyond just internet - NO unwilling has become a test bed for many
programs and efforts that have only been talk until now. If even a
fraction of these new ways of thinking work out, we will be better off.
You may not agree (understandably), but I think John Q. Public would.
