The major difference between DOCSIS 1.0 and DOCSIS 1.1 is that DOCSIS 1.0 uses Service ID (SID) to
identify cable modems and the devices behind them, while DOCSIS 1.1 uses Service Flows. It also has
improved MAC framing features and improved provisioning and authorization with advanced BPI+
features.
Service Flows are the fundamental unit in DOCSIS 1.1 for QoS provisioning. DOCSIS 1.1 allows
multiple service flows per cable modem. This means that different types of traffic like data,
voice, and video can be separately identified on the same cable modem in order to provide
specialized QoS treatment as per traffic needs.
To summarize, DOCSIS 1.1 builds upon 1.0, but also includes the following features:
Quality of Service
Dynamic Services
Concatenation
Fragmentation
Payload Header Suppression
IP Multicast
CM Authentication
SNMPv3
View-based access control and management (VACM)
CM Account Management
Fault Management
Secure Software
Oh yes, (to help keep it on topic) all Linux versions will seem faster.... ;-)
Cheers,
Charles
Hmm....
What are those new features beyond docis 1.0?
Are there any features that might limit/restrict my online experience?
How about all the voice features of 1.1. Would Cox actually be able to
provide me a phone line through my cable modem? (I've been waiting for that
feature to show up in this country.)
