I'd found that the banter is one of the main reasons for showing up. I
learned a lot when I was a newbie by simply listening to the more experienced
folks chat.

Not true. Sparc is a popular platform among unix geeks, for example.

Perhaps. If you know the leaders, I'm more than willing to talk to them. My
one experience with that group wasn't pretty, though. I heard more wrong
advice given out in the 45 minutes I was there than I'd hoped to hear in a
whole year.
