This didn't happen at first, but now I can only log in as root. This message appears when I try as non-root: "Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem."
I looked at the .xsession-errors files for both logins and they were mostly concerned with the dialup problems I have had with 9.0 (and with 8.0 on going back to it with one machine). If I use a wrong password I don't get this message. I don't know what the "failsafe sessions" are.
One machine was getting into dialup with 8.0, stopped when I installed 9.0, and when I put 8.0 back in and copied all the etc files from the one machine that will still connect with an ISP, it didn't help. I have a feeling I have missed one little file somewhere.
