Democrats are no more the herd mentality than Republicans. There are
Democrats who are pro-life and Republicans who aren't.

I suppose I'm close to being a Democrat (I worked on a Democratic
presidential campaign this year), but I'm against almost all abortion.

My uncle is another example. He is a Mennonite minister who is a
registered Democrat but is pro-life.

So, I wouldn't say Democrats are "firmly committed" to abortion.
Sure, the party machinery is, as are some vocal factions. But not
all Democrats are in favor of abortion.
