By default squirrelmail wants to create all subfolders etc into your
$HOME/mail directory while reading new mail from systems mail directory.
Therefore your webserver process (assumed apache) must be able to write
into your $HOME/mail directory.
I believe ther were some other configuration options.
Go to /usr/share/squirrelmail/config/
and run conf.pl for configuration options.
